HUMPBACK WHALE WATCHING SEASON
Humpbacks begin their southern migration from Alaska to Hawai’i in December every year to give birth to their calves as well as to mate. Whales stay through about April, but dates can vary somewhat.

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS BILLABONG PRO
Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay is the second and final event of the Women’s World Championship Tour. The world’s top professional female surfers compete for a share of the purse and final rankings. The contest is held on the days when the surf is biggest and best, as determined by the contest director. Daily start time 8 am.

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL FIRSTLIGHT: ACADEMY SCREENINGS
Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului (Central Maui) presents more than 40 films as part of the Maui Film Festival’s annual presentation on nearly all of the film industry’s most Academy Award-worthy end-of-the-year releases. For more information call (808) 242-7469.

MAUI OCEAN CENTER
The Maui Ocean Center is the only aquarium in the world dedicated to fostering understanding, wonder and respect for Hawaii’s marine life. The three-acre marine park, the largest tropical reef aquarium in the western hemisphere, provides information, tours by marine naturalists and exhibits on thousands of indigenous fish, sharks, turtles, stingrays and other fascinating marine animals. MCGREGOR POINT LOOKOUT
Free whale and ocean information is provided by the Pacific Whale Foundation. The (PWF) Ocean Outreach Van is at this scenic lookout daily 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.with interesting whale displays and free information about whales. PWF’s Marine Research naturalists will be on hand to help you spot whales from one of the best shore-based whalewatching locations on Maui. Free. For more information call (808) 879-8860.

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK
Ongoing Ranger/Naturalist programs include guided walks, hikes, as well as programs on geology and natural and cultural history. SUNSET CLIFF-DIVING
The Sheraton Maui, Kaanapali (West Maui) rests atop the famed black rock, Puu Kekaa, site of many Hawaiian legends. A torch lighting and cliff diving ceremony is enacted each evening right before sunset. The public can watch a young man in ancient Hawaiian garb light torches as he runs to the rock’s summit. ASTRONOMY TOUR OF THE STARS
