Maui’s Haleakala Volcano

The volcano home to the highest peak on the island of Maui in Hawaii is the Haleakala National Park. The peak comes in at 10,023 feet above the sea level and its incredible graceful slopes can be witnessed for many miles within the island. The name Haleakala is interpreted as the “house of the sun” because the thought is the demigod Maui lassoed the great ball of fire in the sky from its natural pass across the sky while he stood on the summit of the volcano. This was to slow the sun’s descent and thus making the day last longer.

The public land of Haleakala amasses over 30,000 acres that includes three different visitor centers and an observatory. However the observatory is closed to the public. As you hike any one of the many trails, either by foot or by horseback, you will come across some of the world’s most incredible scenery.

The best place to see the morning sunrise, which is one of the biggest things that’s popularized the former volcano, is at the visitor center located at the 9,740 foot peak. The sunrise can differ from one morning to the next, but never disappoints a visitor. In addition to the sunrise, the sunset can be just as dynamic. However, one of the more surreal happenings is early evening as the sun is beginning to set, you can often find yourself higher than the clouds in the sky. It’s a humbling experience and one that can bring you an inner peace.

Driving up to the summit brings terrific views along with you. The road is long and winding and takes a bit of time to reach the top, but no doubt worth it. With it you will witness hiking trails and vistas that bring out the beauty of the scenery. You will also encounter the most endangered species than anywhere else within the park service, and don’t be surprised if you witness the fairly rare Hawaiian goose known as a Nene. There is also the just as rare blooming ahinahina plant, also known as a silverwood.

If your getting married on Maui this is a wonderful spot for a couples hike or picnic.
