Humpback Whales in Maui- Maui Photographer

It’s estimated that about 1,500 to 2,000 humpback whales visit Maui on a yearly basis, with the best time to see these behemoths is between the middle of December to the middle of May, as the whales spend the winter in the warmer waters off Hawaii.

So if you are visiting during this time, check out the many whale watching tours for up close looks. Be aware that some tour groups abide by the rules of the whale and do not intrude, but let the whale come to them, such as the Pacific Whale Foundation, while others may be a little more risky. If you don’t want to go by boat, find a high cliff to do your viewing.

Another great option for whale watching is to leave early morning on a Stand-up Paddle Board. My recommendation is to only do this if you’re an experienced STUP paddler and swimmer. You must know the water and winds of Maui as there are usually more than a handful of people saved daily by Maui’s lifeguards. The winds come up mid- morning and if you’re not an experienced paddler, chances of you getting swept out to seas are high. There are also canoe companies that can take you on tours to see the whales. No matter which route you decide to see the whales, I would suggest taking your camera with you. Another option is to hire your own professional Maui photographer to accompany you on your excursion so you don’t have to worry about trying to capture them on film.
