11 Best Ideas For A Public Marriage Proposal
So what’s the best idea for a public marriage proposal? There are many out there to choose from
or by knowing her likes and dislikes, you can get creative. The more astute she is, the more
thought you have to put into it to pull it off. However, before you do a public proposal, be sure
she won’t be embarrassed and feel confident she is going to say yes. Otherwise things can get
awkward pretty quickly. Here are 11 great public proposal ideas to get you started.
Whether you choose one of these or go with one of your own ideas, consider hiring a wedding
photographer to capture the moment. Be sure the photographer remains unobtrusive as they shoot
so not to give away any idea that something is about to happen. Afterwards, if you like their
work, then maybe you already have your wedding photographer all wrapped up.
Here’s a shot from a secret proposal taken in Maui by our company at Behind The Lens Maui by our Wedding Photography team.
1. If she enjoys dancing, as most women do, take her out to a club of her liking. Arrange
with either the band or the DJ for them to hand you the microphone at some point during
the night so that you can publically propose to her.
2. This one is a little out there, literally, but take her on vacation and while on flight, ask the
attendants if you can use the loud speaker to make an announcement or imitate the scene
from the Adam Sandler movie, “The Wedding Singer” where you play your guitar and
sing to her.
3. This one has to be planned out, and hope it’s not a windy day, but take her on a picnic
and while lying on a blanket together, have a skywriter write out your proposal in the
skies above you.
4. Is she a theater buff? If so, arrange with the stage manager ahead of time to either be
asked up on stage at the end of the cast’s intro for you to propose with the cast as your
support, or have the cast do it while you are still sitting in the audience.
5. Take her to a local dinner house where a well-known musician is playing and arrange that
after a particular song, the singer says, “take it away (your name).” Quickly the spot light
goes on you as you get down on one knee. Singer Marc Cohn recently accommodated a
fan’s request during a performance in Southern California.
6. Take her to an aquarium and while the divers are in the big tank, have them roll open a
sign proposing to her.
7. Throw together a party and arrange for your friends to wears t-shirts under their jackets,
each with a letter. Ask for someone to take a group photo. With you and your girl
centered in the front row, have your friends behind you open or remove their jackets
spelling out, “Will you marry me?” Then ask to look at the image to see if it is to her
liking.
8. Sending her on a scavenger hunt is always fun. This can easily be done by text messaging
her as you lead her on. You can guide her to several stops along the way until she reaches
your location. After she arrives, she will open the door to find you on one knee with
family and friends behind you sharing the moment.
9. Consider going hi-tech and put together a live-stream internet channel. This will allow
your families and friends to watch it live. Set her up and make her think she is doing
something fun online with you and once you got her at a certain point, ask her. Her initial
reaction will be captured on podcast for a keepsake.
10. Create a web page. The Home Page can be of interest to her. Include a link that she is
sure to open, but instead it will bring up your proposal in written, photographic or video
form.
11. Have your friends throw a party that includes 10 tables for people to sit around. Start with
table one, where a representative sitting there will read from an envelope one reason, out
of ten, to marry that special someone. Make them humorous so she thinks this is just for
fun and will be unsuspecting. Then table two, three, four, etc. The plan is that you will
have envelope number ten. At your turn, stand and read, “and the tenth reason to marry
is” then drop to one knee and propose to her.
