Wedding Traditions- Italy

The wedding traditions in Italy are as steeped in history as almost any country or culture. Italian
wedding traditions can vary from region to region, but for the most part they are very similar.
Some traditions continue today, but for many, they are part of Italy’s past. Here are just a few
examples and a look into Italian traditions when it comes to the engagement and the wedding day
itself.

Engagement Traditions

Unlike today’s society, an Italian wedding engagement of the past was handled by the bride and
groom’s families. One of two scenarios was likely to take place. In many instances, a masciata,
which is an Italian matchmaker, would deliver the message of intention by the potential groom to
the bride’s father. If the father accepted the groom’s proposal, then there would be a wedding.

In another scenario, you would find the two families meeting to discuss this potential union, and
it would be the bride’s father that would determine if it will take place or not. In the event there
were any doubts during the discussion, he would often end it before the end of the discussion,
rather than wait until the talks were over.

The engagement period continues as the bride prepares for her big day. She would put together a
trousseau, similar to a hope chest that included items that would be saved for her future home. It
is very much like today’s version of the gifts received during a bridal shower. Often you would
find in the trousseau clothing, household goods, as well as other goods and possibly money.
