How do men and women really feel about dating and relationships? What are the best ways to meet a potential date or what are some of the things you should know before you go on that first date?

Here are 20 survey results according to various reports and sources.

1. Along with his wife Sue, speed dating was invented by Rabbi Yaakov Deyo in 1999 out of Los Angeles, California. It was designed to match up Jewish single men with Jewish single women in the tradition of a chaperoned gathering.

2. In the United States, the third week of September is known as National Singles Week.

3. Women that post photos of themselves on various internet dating sites are likely to receive twice as many email messages, compared to women that don’t. The same survey resulted in men who reported incomes of $250,000 and higher had received 156% more emails compared to those with $50,000 annual incomes.

4. Studies have shown that women find themselves attracted to guys dressed in blue. So guys if you are unsure to what you will wear on a date, go blue.

5. Elle magazine and MSNBC.com report that more than 31% of men stated they had broke up with an overweight partner compared to 12% for the women doing the same.

6. In the U.S. alone, online dating brings in $1.8 billion annually to their industry, while matchmaking coaches combine for another $260 million.

8. University of Pennsylvania psychologists concluded from a study of over 10,000 speed daters, that most people will usually make a decision about a person’s attractiveness within the first three seconds of meeting.

10. In Seattle, WA, the home of the 4M Multimillionaire Matchmaking Club, is a club where their male clients are single millionaires and are charged between $10-$30 thousand for their services. Meanwhile, for women to be added to the list of potential dates, they are only required to pay $250.

11. In a Match.com survey of 5,000 single people, 43% stated that what mattered most to them was fresh breath. Stylish clothes came next at 17%, followed up by sexy fragrance (15%), good skin (14%) and great hair (10%).

12. Talk about a great paycheck, one matchmaker from Manhattan in New York begins his rates at $20,000. However, if that isn’t enough, if a couple marries from his matchmaking skills, a financial “marriage bonus” is expected.

16. First impressions are everything. Studies have shown that even before a male speaks one word, the way he stands (ie: slouching or erect) counts as 80% of the female’s first impression.

17. In the early 1900’s, the old days of courting (where a young woman entertained her male callers along with a chaperone) began to evolve into dating without a watchful eye. However as the century progressed, and people did not marry until a later age, dating changed to “hooking up” in the 1960’s and 70’s.

18. Studies have shown that men are more likely to be put off by groups of women that are being loud. They tend to believe that in the event a woman wants to get a date, that she should step away from her group to allow the male the opportunity to approach her.

19. Although repeating every move the woman makes while on a date can be annoying, women find

that “mirroring” or repeating her some of her body language can often impress her during the date. It shows the man had an interest and paid attention to her.

20. Being negative while on a date is considered to be one of the biggest “turn-offs” in a date, compared to happiness. Happiness is considered contagious and dates find it difficult to ignore and walk away.
