Wearing of the Bridal Veil

– The bridal veil has been traced as far back as 2,000 years ago as Roman brides would wear them as a symbol of secrecy, as well as modesty. Only her husband was allowed to remove the veil at the conclusion of the wedding ceremony.

– Martha Washington’s daughter, Nelly Custis, is considered to be the first American woman that wore a wedding veil. Custis wore the veil as a way to please her soon-to-be husband since he usually complimented her on her beauty when seen through a window that donned a laced curtain.
– Known to take place in some Eastern countries, the veil is often placed between the groom and his bride during the wedding ceremony as a way to ensure that neither one can see the other until the ceremony ends.
